Ensure your pet is microchipped
Ensure your pet is vaccinated against Rabies. Please note they must be at least 12 weeks old to receive the vaccine.
Ensure a minimum of 21 days elapses between the date of the Rabies vaccination and the date of travel.
Get an Animal Health Certificate signed by an Official Vet – the Official Vet will only be able to sign this if you meet the criteria on the previous steps.
Dogs travelling to Finland, Malta, Ireland or Norway will also need to have a tapeworm tablet administered by a vet and certified on the AHC 24-120 hours before you arrive there.
All dogs returning to the UK from the EU must also have a tapeworm tablet administered by a vet 24-120 hours before arrival in the UK.
Animal Health Certificates can be issued for travel with up to five pets. Travel with more than five pets is allowed if they are participating in a competition, exhibition or sporting event, but some additional documentation will be needed.
If you wish to travel to the EU with a pet other than a dog, cat or ferret, check the individual national rules for entry conditions as these may vary.
If you are planning to travel outside the EU or are moving abroad with your pet, different rules are likely to apply. It can take several months to complete all the relevant tests and vaccinations, so please contact us well in advance for advice!
Aside from Rabies, there may be other diseases present in some parts of the EU that we do not currently have in the UK. These include infections spread by ticks, sandflies and mosquitoes, some of which are potentially life threatening. The risk will vary depending on where you are travelling and the time of the year. Please ask the vet for advice about prevention of these infections
